Thanks to some miracle of scheduling, E, JW, H, & I all had the same Friday off. Even better, the weather was sunny and it was still warm enough for us to hit the beach for the day! We drove out to Cape May in New Jersey. Before setting up on the sand, we stopped at Lobster House for lunch, a recommendation from H’s co-worker.

We shared some lobster salad and JW had the frutti di mare salad – assorted seafood with roasted red peppers and olives.

I couldn’t resist soft shell crab, and this was perfectly fried. The bun was spongy and forgettable, but the fries were great. Whoever runs the fryer in the kitchen is an expert.

E chose sauteed scallops. These were impressive for the generous size and fresh taste. I’ve rarely had better scallops.

H picked calamari. Basically, Lobster House does seafood right. Everything we tried was fresh tasting and perfectly cooked.

We finished with an apple ugly – I guess that’s their term for apple fritters. Greasy, not great.

We also ordered a mini key lime pie, mostly because it was obviously housemade, unlike most of their (admittedly impressive) dessert case. None of us had room at lunch but it was really yummy when we ate it on the beach a couple hours later.
Lobster House deserves its fame. In addition to the typical seafood stand menu, they offer an assortment of seafood salads and take home entrees, and dozens of cheesecake/tart/cake/cannoli variations. Half of the long counter is a fish market, half is for take out. Behind the shop is a patio, off the patio is a raw bar/full bar, and a renovated boat that serves as the sit down portion of the restaurant. It was a great start to our afternoon in Cape May.
